Woman Escapes Car Fire but Is Injured in Hit and Run

A Tampa woman was left critically injured after falling prey to a hit and run accident on the Courtney Campbell Causeway early Monday on July 8, 2013. Police are continuing investigations and attempts to identify the black SUV that drove off after running the woman's leg over.

Police report that the woman, who is 41 years old, was traveling westbound when she lost control of her vehicle and crashed into the causeway barrier. The reason for the initial crash is unknown but it left her vehicle with its side smashed into the barrier, trapping her within. Reports state that the woman was forced to climb out of the passenger side window, which was inches from the lane where cars sped by, in order to escape the car fire that was starting.

As she climbed out of the window, she fell into the road momentarily. At that moment, a black SUV ran over her leg but neglected to stop afterwards. The hit and run occurred just minutes after her crash into the barrier and police are still looking for the vehicle and its owner. Police claim that it would have been impossible for the driver of SUV to be unaware of the woman he or she just hit. The only explanation is that they fled out of panic or simply malicious apathy.

The woman was taken to the Tampa General Hospital and was in critical conditions. Her injuries last included a badly broken leg, from the hit and run, and severe burn injuries from the car fire she was fleeing when she was hit.

Tampa Police have requested that anyone in the area who has information on the identity or whereabouts of the black SUV contact them immediately.
