Aggressive Driving Leads to Arrest

In late March, an aggressive driving incident caused an aggressive driver to lose control of his vehicle, thereby causing him to crash into a light pole before fleeing the scene. The crash was captured on video by the other driver, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

On Monday, March 24, at 11 a.m., J.W. of Tampa was traveling southbound on U.S. Highway 41 north of Gibsonton in a 2008 Ford pickup truck where he was tailgating a fellow driver. The driver in front of J.W. decided to record the incident on a cell phone.

According to reports, J.W. passed the other driver and proceeded to make an offensive hand gesture. As J.W. merged in front of the other vehicle, he lost control of the truck, which sent the Ford careening across the northbound lanes of traffic onto a grass shoulder where it collided into a light pole owned by the Florida Department of Transportation.

The impact was strong enough to collapse the light pole on the roadway. Shortly after the collision, J.W. fled the scene of the accident, said troopers.

Thanks to the other driver who had the forethought to record the aggressive driving behavior, the cell phone video captured valuable evidence that state troopers used to track down J.W. at his home on Wednesday. J.W. was arrested for leaving the scene of a traffic crash, careless driving and failure to wear his seatbelt.

Upon arrest, J.W. was transported to Hillsborough County Jail, where he was later released on bail, according to jail records.
