12-Year-Old Boy Killed in Side-Impact Crash

In the morning hours of Saturday, Sep. 20, 2014, a 12-year-old boy was killed in an accident in Hudson.

E.K., 12, a resident of New Port Richey, was in a Ford Windstar minivan, along with his family when the van was struck by a Chevrolet Impala.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol, K.F., 25, from Hudson, was driving the Impala headed eastbound on Bolton Avenue, towards the stop sign located at Little Road/County Road 1.

The woman drove the Impala into the northbound lanes of County Road 1, which is where she crashed into the driver's side of the Windstar in a side-impact crash.

The Ford Windstar was traveling northbound on County Road 1, it was driven by M.K., a 44-year-old mother. Also riding in the van were her 71-year-old husband, her 6-year-old son, and her 12-year-old son.

After the van was hit broadside, it rotated counter-clockwise, overturned and crashed into a sign, troopers said.

The mother, father, and their 6-year-old son were all ejected from the minivan, but their 12-year-old son was restrained and not ejected, said the highway patrol.

The 12-year-old boy was transported to St. Joseph's Hospital and died an hour after the accident. His 6-year-old brother was taken to St. Joseph's with serious injuries. Both mother and father were taken to Regional Medical Center Bayonet Point with serious injuries.

The 25-year-old driver of the Impala was not injured; however, her passenger who was a minor did sustain minor injuries, troopers said.

T-Bone Accidents Can Be Deadly

Side-impact collisions, also known as T-bone accidents typically occur at intersections, and usually when an at-fault driver runs a stop sign or red light, or otherwise fails to yield the right of way.

T-bone accidents can be some of the most deadly types of crashes because passengers sitting near the point of impact have virtually no protection. Side-impact crashes are most deadly in rural areas where vehicles are likely to be traveling at high speeds.
