Speed Was a Factor in Fatal Bloomingdale Avenue Crash

On Feb. 10, 2014 the Tampa Tribune published an article highlighting the fact that the Bloomingdale Avenue crash victims had been longtime friends. The Tribune began by stating that his mother Donna Martin said that David "Casey" Martin was the kind of guy that a friend could always count on. Because of his reliable qualities, when his longtime friend Catherine "Cat" Loux called him in the early hours of Sunday morning to pick her up, that's exactly what he did.

The young friends were tragically killed on Bloomingdale Avenue near Kings Avenue at around 4:30 a.m. when the vehicle Martin was driving veered off the road and collided with a utility pole.

Martin, 21, had a bright future ahead of him. He was hoping to join the Army and become a nurse. According to his mother he had recently been job-hopping and trying to live on his own. Martin had attended Bloomingdale High School and played soccer throughout this youth with the Brandon Area Youth Soccer League until he reached 18.

Donna Martin had known Loux and said that the 20-year-old Lithia woman had been friends with her son for years. "Cat was a great girl, too. Our deepest regrets go out to her family."

The Hillsborough County Sheriff's officials reported that Martin had been driving a 1996 Jaguar at a high rate of speed just before the accident. According to reports, the car split in two when it hit the power pole; the power pole also split in half.

Donna Martin said the Jaguar was not her son's and that it was likely that her son had borrowed the car from a friend to pick up Loux, who was just a few blocks away visiting friends at the time. Donna Martin didn't know a lot of details. "He was just a great friend and a great big brother to his three little sisters," Marie, 15, Olivia, 14 and Abigael, 13.
